Learning to Be Loved

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.”(Luke 10:27)

Our Lord Jesus Christ taught us to love our neighbor as if the neighbor were you yourself.  Treat the neighbor as well as you treat yourself.   St Gregory Palamas (d. 1359AD) offers a little insight into how we might do that.

“Do you want to be loved by everyone and granted pardon? Do you regard being blamed as distressing and hard to bear, especially if you have done very little wrong?

Love everyone yourself,

be quick to forgive,

avoid passing judgement,

seeing, as it were, yourself in every man, and

making this the basis for your verdicts, attitudes and actions.”   (The Homilies, p 355)
