But when the time had fully come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. (Galatians 4:4-5)
In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace which he lavished upon us. (Ephesians 1:7-8)
The Son of God became incarnate in Jesus Christ in order to save and redeem us from the curse of the law and from death. God’s motivation is His love for us as God does not benefit from Christ’s incarnation or resurrection. All of that is for us humans.
By choosing to sin, humans voluntarily transferred themselves from being children of God to becoming slaves of Satan. Humans may not have understood it as such, but they submitted themselves to Satan’s lordship (even if deceived by Satan). Satan reduces us to the status of slaves, imprisoning us in hell with no way out.
However, God still loves us (despite our sins) and wants to free us from our imprisonment in hell. Satan, God’s enemy and ours, has no desire to allow us out of hell, no matter what. God’s response is not simply to destroy His enemy, for Satan too is one of God’s creatures. God uses love to free us from our enslavement. God’s Son becomes incarnate in Jesus Christ, for the very purpose of dying and being able to enter the place of the dead (Hades or Hell). God cannot die, but God confronts death by becoming incarnate assuming a mortal human body. Christ voluntarily submits Himself as a human being to death, which is Satan’s power.
For the Son of God to die, he must have flesh and blood. Once He is in Hell, Christ destroys the power of death. His “paying the price” for our salvation is His becoming incarnate. He didn’t have to do this, but voluntarily chooses to save us by love, which necessitates His incarnation and subsequent death. He doesn’t just use divine power from the safety of heaven, rather His becoming incarnate is his “paying the price” for our salvation. To save us by love instead of just power, He has to pay the price and become incarnate, taking on body and blood. His sacrifice on the cross is the price God paid for our salvation, a salvation not based in omnipotence but in love.
