Today the Church commemorates St Genevieve of Paris, a nun who died in the early 6th Century. She is credited, through her prayers entreating God’s mercy, with saving Paris from being sacked by Attila the Hun, who unexpectedly turned his army away from the City of Lights. So though not a military hero, she was credited with stopping a battle and preserving many lives – a Christian warrior. She is one of the patron saints of the city of Paris
She entered the convent when she was 15 years old. According to her biographers, she received from God the gifts of clairvoyance and of working miracles. Gradually, the people of Paris and the surrounding area regarded Genevieve as God’s chosen holy vessel (2 Timothy 2:21).
Although I have no idea why, during the Middle Ages, she was considered to be the patron Saint of wine makers. Russian emigres in Paris in the 20th Century also considered her to be their patron saint.
